"O Paladino do Oeste" é uma clássica série de TV do gênero western. Foi criada nos anos 50 por Sam Rolfe e Herb Meadow, dois jovens escritores, que receberam a incumbência de criar um cowboy diferente. A produção ficou a cargo do próprio Rolfe através da Filmmaster Productions / Paramount Studios via Rede Americana de TV CBS. Roteiristas que depois se tornaram famosos escreveram episódios para o programa (dentre eles, Gene Roddenberry de "Jornada nas Estrelas", Bruce Geller das séries "Missão Impossível" e "Mannix", Harry Julian Fink de "Dirty Harry" e até Sam Peckinpah).

Entre os diretores do programa, nomes como o de Andrew V. McLaglen, Louis Milestone, Buzz Kulik e a famosa atriz Ida Lupino (sem contar que o próprio astro do show, o ator Richard Boone, dirigiu vários episódios da série).

"O Paladino do Oeste" foi apresentado em solo americano entre 14 de Setembro de 1957 e 20 de Abril de 1963, totalizando 225 episódios em preto e branco, cada um com 30 minutos de duração. Durante esse período, o personagem também aparecia em programas americanos de rádio, livros e HQs (no Brasil as HQs foram lançadas pela Editora Ebal).

O foco da série era um pistoleiro que servira como oficial da união na guerra civil. Em suas aventuras, sempre se vestia de preto demonstrando ser uma pessoa rude e violenta. Fora delas, vivia numa luxuosa suíte de um hotel de São Francisco sempre se mostrando educado e refinado em seus hábitos. O Paladino apreciava bons vinhos, adorava jogar baralho, estava sempre em companhia de belas mulheres e possuía em seu cartão de visita o perfil de um cavalo do jogo de xadrez com inscrição "Have Gun Will Travel" (Tenho um Revólver Posso Viajar).

A interpretação de Richard Boone imortalizou o personagem.  A canção do tema de abertura foi composta e conduzida por Bernard Herrmann e a canção de encerramento - chamada "The Ballad of Paladin" - foi escrita por Johnny Western, Sam Rolfe e Richard Boone.

No Brasil, a série estreou no dia 09 de Março de 1961, quinta-feira, as 21h30, pela TV Record Canal 7 de São Paulo. Substituiu na ocasião outra série western chamada "Matt Dillon Sheriff" (nome dado na ocasião para os episódios iniciais de "Gunsmoke"). Paladino ficou em exibição na Record até Abril de 1965. Em Março de 1972 retornou pela TV Tupi Canal 4 de São Paulo, sendo exibida diariamente as 17h30. Em Janeiro de 1977 a série foi relançada pela TV Bandeirantes Canal 13 de São Paulo, que a exibia diariamente as 17h00. Na locução da Cine Castro, o nome da série em sua abertura era mencionado como "Paladino, O Defensor da Justiça".

Richard Boone nasceu Richard Allen Boone em 18 de Junho de 1917. Foi casado por três vezes. Trabalhou praticamente até sua morte, em 10 de janeiro de 1981, vitimado por um câncer na garganta. Suas cinzas foram espalhadas no mar do Havaí.
