Em Dezembro de 1948, o escritor Ed James resolveu gravar um disco narrando a rotina diária de um pai de família chamado Jim Henderson (que depois passou a se chamar Jim Anderson). Em Agosto de 1949, histórias sobre esse pai de família passaram a ser transmitidas pela Rádio NBC, sob o título "Father Knows Best?" (atentem para a interrogação no final).

Jim Anderson - que no rádio já era interpretado pelo ator Robert Young - era um agente de seguros que comandava uma típica família americana de classe média dos anos 50. Nela estavam sua esposa Margareth (June Whitley, depois Jean Vander Pyl) e os filhos Betty (Rhoda Williams), Bud (Ted Donaldson) e Kathy (Norma Jean Nilson). O programa de rádio foi apresentado até Novembro de 1953.

Robert Young e Eugene Rodney eram amigos desde 1935. Baseados nas experiências que que cada um tinha com esposa e filhos, resolveram - após o cancelamento do programa de rádio - produzir uma série cômica sobre o mesmo tema para a televisão.

A produtora formada pela dupla resolveu então tirar a interrogação do título. A idéia era manter o mesmo esquema base do rádio, assim como seus personagens, com poucas alterações. Na versão radiofônica, o personagem de Robert Young era sarcástico e perfeccionista. Seus filhos possuíam várias imperfeições. Na TV, a série mostrava uma família americana ideal, composta por bons cidadãos, pais e filhos exemplares.

Do elenco original do rádio apenas Robert Young foi mantido. O dia-a-dia da série passou a mostrar Jim Anderson chegando em casa, encontrando pela frente acontecimentos normais do cotidiano da família, todos resolvidos por ele com muita sabedoria e bom humor. Sua esposa Margareth foi vivida na televisão por Jane Wyatt. A atriz Elinor Donahue deu vida a filha mais velha Betty, Lauren Chapin passou a encarnar a precoce caçula Kathy e Billy Gray passou a interpretar o adolescente Bud.
"Papai Sabe Tudo" foi a comédia familiar mais importante dos anos 50 em território americano (o mesmo acontecendo entre nós no início dos 60). A bem da verdade, retratava uma família de classe média onde o pai era mostrado como aquele que melhor sabia o que era bom para esposa e filhos. Tipo do "melhor jeito de se viver" que o americano pregava na ocasião, numa sociedade que segundo eles era muito melhor do que qualquer outra. Hoje em dia o programa pode ser considerado com um exemplo de paternalismo que já não existe mais (pelo menos não nesses moldes). Na época, era visto como um bonito e perfeito retrato de família, embora integrantes de seu elenco estivessem ligados a problemas sociais graves (como alcoolismo, por exemplo). Na série, a pisada era leve, já que nenhuma das crianças chegou a viver qualquer tipo de problema mais sério. No fundo, havia a nítida intenção de não se mostrar uma América como ela realmente era.

"Papai Sabe Tudo" foi produzida pela Screen Gems. Nos Estados Unidos, foi apresentada entre 03 de Outubro de 1954 e 23 de Maio de 1960. No total, foram produzidos 203 episódios em preto e branco, distribuídos ao longo de seis temporadas. No Brasil, foi lançada pela TV Tupi Canal 3 de SP - a partir de 06 de Março de 1960 - Domingo, 20h30, com exibições e reprises progressivas já no Canal 4, sempre com grande audiência. A série foi também exibida pela TV Globo (1969) e pela TV Cultura (1971). Vários episódios ainda possuem a dublagem original feita pelo estúdio Gravason.

Por seu trabalho na série, Robert Young ganhou dois prêmios Emmy e Jane Wyatt ganhou três. O elenco original se reuniu em dois filmes para TV nos anos 70: "Father Knows Best Reunion" (15/05/1977) e "Father Knows Best: Home for Christmas" (18/12/1977).

Todos os episódios da série já foram disponibilizados em DVD nos Estados Unidos entre 2008 e 2011. No Brasil, a série teve lançamento em DVD através da distribuidora World Classics.
