"Quinta Dimensão" mostrava histórias que misturavam ficção e fantasia. Cada episódio tinha como diferencial sua autenticidade baseada em fatos verdadeiramente sobrenaturais. A série foi criada por Leslie Stevens em meio ao sucesso de "Além da Imaginação" (The Twilignt Zone). Ao lado dele, profissionais do calibre de Joseph Stefano e Conrad Hall.

Cada episódio iniciava com uma narração projetada sobre um osciloscópio (narração originalmente feita por Vic Perrin) onde a pessoa se identificava como “Control Voice”. A narração dizia: “There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat, there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits.”

A versão em português era apresentada mais ou menos nos seguintes termos: “Não há nada de errado com sua televisão. Não tente ajustar a imagem. Estamos controlando a transmissão. Se nós desejarmos deixar o volume mais alto ou baixo, nós o faremos. Nós controlamos o horizontal e a vertical. Podemos mexer na imagem e mudar seu foco. Durante a próxima hora, acomode-se tranqüilamente que nós controlaremos tudo aquilo que você ouve ou vê. Repetimos, não há nada de errado com sua televisão. Você está a ponto de participar de uma grande aventura. Você está a ponto de experimentar o temor e o mistério para as quais a sua mente alcançará ... a Quinta Dimensão”.

A série foi apresentada originalmente nos Estados Unidos, pela Rede ABC, entre 16 de setembro de 1963 a 16 de janeiro de 1965, totalizando 49 episódios em preto e branco. Em 1966 o programa recebeu o prêmio Writers Guild of America para o escritor e  roteirista Harlan Ellison (episódio “Demon with a Glass Hand”).

No Brasil estreou via TV Excelsior, Canal 9 de SP, em 07 de Agosto de 1964, uma sexta-feira, as 21h30. Anos depois, foi reprisada pelos canais pagos MGM e USA.

"Quinta Dimensão" não possuía elenco fixo. A cada episódio, um novo time de atores e atrizes davam sustentação ao episódio produzido. E em vários episódios, a participação de alguns que se tornariam muito famosos nos anos seguintes: Nick Adams ("O Rebelde"), Eddie Albert ("O Fazendeiro do Asfalto"), Edward Asner ("Lou Grant"), Robert Culp ("Os Destemidos"), James Doohan ("Jornada nas Estrelas"), Martin Landau ("Missão Impossível", "Espaço 1999"), David McCallum ("O Agente da UNCLE", "O Homem Invisível", "NCIS"), Leonard Nimoy ("Jornada nas Estrelas","Missão Impossível"), Lloyd Nolan ("Julia"), Martin Sheen ("The West Wing") e Adam West ("Batman").

Em 1995 a série foi reeditada com o mesmo título. Exibida inicialmente no Canal Showtime e por último no Sci-Fi Channel, esteve no ar entre 26 de março de 1995 e 18 de janeiro de 2002, totalizando 154 episódios coloridos ao longo de 7 temporadas.

A nova "Quinta Dimensão" foi filmada no Canadá e contou com histórias escritas por grandes nomes da literatura de ficção. O programa tinha agora mais violência e sexo, incluindo ocasionalmente cenas de nudez feminina.

A cada intervalo comercial, a “Control Voice” (que nesta versão era de Kevin Conway) repetia frases como “The Outer Limits.... please standy by”. A imagem surrealista da abertura foi desenvolvida por Jerry Uelsmann.
