“Gunsmoke” é a série western mais longa da TV americana. Exibida nos Estados Unidos entre 10 de setembro e 31 de março de 1975, contabilizou 635 episódios. As 12 primeiras temporadas foram exibidas aos sábados as 22h00. As temporadas 13 a 16 foram ao ar nas segundas-feiras as 19h30. As últimas quatro temporadas foram exibidas também nas segundas-feiras, mas no horário das 20h00. Foi a partir da temporada 2 (1956/57) que o programa entrou para a lista dos 10 melhores, tendo conquistado inclusive a primeira posição.

Antes da série de TV, “Gunsmoke” era uma série de rádio estrelada por William Conrad (da série de TV “Cannon”), que foi levada ao ar entre 1952 e 1961. Na televisão, coube ao ator James Arness interpretar o xerife Matt Dillon. Durante muito tempo contou-se que o projeto tinha em mente o ator John Wayne no papel principal, mas este – em função dos compromissos que tinha no cinema – acabou indicando Arness, que era o irmão mais velho do ator Peter Graves (das séries de TV “Fury” e “Missão Impossível”). O ator Dennis Weaver, no entanto, desmentiu tal versão em DVD comemorativo aos 50 anos da série. Alegou que essa história era um absurdo visto Wayne ser um dos grandes astros de cinema na época. Mas é correta a versão de que foi Wayne que incentivou Arness a aceitar o papel (tanto que o primeiro episódio da série é apresentado por John Wayne).

A produção iniciou com episódios de 30 minutos em preto e branco (temporadas 1 a 6). A partir da temporada 7, iniciada em 1961, cada episódio passou para a duração de 60 minutos ainda em preto e branco. “Gunsmoke” só ganhou cores a partir da temporada 12, em setembro de 1966, temporada esta que esteve ameaçada de não ser produzida, já que os executivos de produção anunciaram a intenção de cancelar a série. Uma grande onda de protestos aliada a movimentos de pessoas influentes acabou por definir que o programa continuaria em produção.

James Arness (no papel de Matt Dillon) e Milburn Stone (Galen “Doc” Adams) estiveram à frente do elenco durante os 20 anos de produção da série (1955 a 1975). A atriz Amanda Blake só não participou da última temporada do programa (1955 a 1974). Dennis Weaver (das séries “Ben, O Urso Amigo” e “McCloud”) fez o papel do assistente de Dillon – Chester Goode - entre 1955 e 1964. O ator Ken Curtis fez o assistente de Dillon – Festus Haggen – entre 1964 e 1975.

Matt Dillon teve alguns assistentes interinos: Quint Asper (o ator Burt Reynols) entre 1962 e 1965; Thad Greenwood (o ator Roger Ewing) em 1967 e New O’Brien (o ator Buck Taylor) entre 1967 e 1975.

Em 1975, apesar da boa audiência, a CBS tomou a decisão de não renovar Gunsmoke para uma 21ª temporada. A atitude foi tomada sem se fazer nenhum anúncio público ou informar produtores ou membros com antecedência. Todo o elenco ficou chocado com o cancelamento, pois não sabia que a CBS estava considerando tal possibilidade.

Em 1987, a CBS encomendou um filme chamado “Gunsmoke: Return to Dodge”. James Arness e Amanda Blake retornaram em seus papéis icônicos de Matt Dillon e Miss Kitty, com Buck Taylor vivendo Newly O'Brian. Doc Adams e Festus Haggen não aparecem no filme. Milburn Stone havia falecido em 1980 e Ken Curtis questionou a oferta salarial que lhe fora feita. Os roteiristas responderam à ausência de Curtis fazendo de Newly o novo xerife de Dodge City.

Em 1990, um segundo telefilme, “Gunsmoke: The Last Apache”, foi lançado. Amanda Blake havia falecido no ano anterior. Outros filmes incluíram “Gunsmoke: To the Last Man” (1992), “Gunsmoke: The Long Ride” (1993) e “Gunsmoke: One Man's Justice” (1994). Arness estrelou todos os cinco filmes feitos para a televisão.

Em DVD, a série foi lançada nos Estados Unidos entre 2007 e 2020.

James Arness nasceu em 26 de Maio de 1923. Faleceu aos 88 anos de causas naturais no dia 03 de Junho de 2011. Depois de “Gunsmoke”, alcançou grande sucesso estrelando a minissérie “A Conquista do Oeste” (How the West Was Won, 1976 a 1979).

Milburn Stone nasceu em 05 de julho de 1904. Faleceu em 12 de junho de 1980, vitimado por um ataque cardíaco.

Amanda Blake nasceu em fevereiro de 1929. Fumante inveterada, passou por uma cirurgia de câncer bucal em 1977. Faleceu em 16 de agosto de 1989, vitimada por insuficiência hepática causada por uma hepatite viral. Seu médico alegou tempos depois que a atriz fora vitimada pela AIDS. Seus amigos mais próximos se manifestaram, dizendo que Amanda não era usuária de drogas ou sexualmente promíscua. Chegaram depois a conclusão de que ela teria contraído a doença do ex-marido.

Dennis Weaver nasceu em 04 de junho de 1924. Depois de “Gunsmoke”, atuou nas séries “Ben, O Urso Amigo” e “McCloud”. Foi também o ator principal do clássico filme de TV “Duel” (1971), do diretor Steven Spielperg. Faleceu em 24 de fevereiro de 2006, por complicações de um câncer de próstata.

Ken Curtis nasceu em 02 de julho de 1916. Além de ator, era também cantor. Faleceu enquanto dormia, em 28 de abril de 1991, vitimado por um ataque cardíaco.

No Brasil, “Gunsmoke” estreou pela TV Record Canal 7 de SP em setembro de 1960. Mas o título da série na ocasião era “Matt Dillon Sheriff”. Tudo indica que a temporada exibida foi a inicial, onde ficou até novembro de 1961. Substituída pela série de TV “Na Corda Bamba” (com Michael Connors), “Gunsmoke” ficou um longo tempo fora das grades de programação, ressurgindo na TV Tupi Canal 4 de SP lá pelos idos de 1967, já com episódios de 1 hora de duração as quartas-feiras, 20h30 (não há como precisar qual temporada foi exibida na ocasião, mas a dublagem era da Dublasom Guanabara).

Decorridos alguns meses, “Gunsmoke” migrou para a TV Excelsior Canal 9 de SP em 1968, tendo sido exibida as 22h05 das quartas-feiras (algum tempo depois, foi realocada para as sextas-feiras).

Em 1969, “Gunsmoke” ressurgiu na TV Globo, onde ficou até 1972, sendo exibida aos sábados, as 22h30, antes do programa “Amaral Neto, O Repórter”.

Consta que a série voltou a ser exibida pela TV Record a partir de 1972, sendo uma das várias que apareceram na famosa “Sessão Bang-Bang” da emissora. Sua última exibição ocorreu no extinto canal Retro Channel, da TV a cabo.
