"Friends" é uma série de TV em formato de sitcom (comédia de situação) que foi ar nos Estados Unidos, pela Rede NBC, entre 22 de Setembro de 1994 a 06 de Maio de 2004. O foco são seis amigos que moram em Manhattan, Nova York.
O título original pensado para o programa - entre em Novembro e Dezembro de 1993 - foi "Insomnia Cafe". Após algumas alterações em roteiros já escritos, outros nomes foram cogitados (como "Six of One" e "Friends Like Us") até tomarem "Friends" como título definitivo.
A série detém o excepcional marco de ter aparecido entre as 10 mais assistidas em todas as temporadas produzidas. Estima-se que cerca de 52,5 milhões de espectadores assistiram ao último episódio, levado ao ar em 06 Maio de 2004 (quinto final de série mais assistido na história da televisão).
FRIENDS - PREMISSA
Rachel Green (Jennifer) foge no dia do casamento e encontra a amiga de infância Monica Geller (Courteney). Ambas se tornam colegas de quarto. Rachel se junta a um grupo de amigos de Monica. São eles o ator Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), o profissional de negócios Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), a massagista e musicista Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow) e o paleontólogo Ross Geller (David Schwimmer).
FRIENDS - PERSONAGENS
Rachel (Jennifer) viveu uma relação instável com Ross (Schwimmer), da qual tiveram uma filha chamada Emma. No último episódio da série, Rachel desiste de um trabalho em Paris e volta a namorar com Ross.
Monica (Courteney) é irmã de Ross (Schwimmer). Durante a produção da série começa a namorar Chandler (Perry) e se casa com ele na sétima temporada. Na décima, adotam dois filhos através de uma barriga de aluguel que engravidou por acidente e não sabia que teria gêmeos.
Phoebe (Lisa) saiu de casa aos 14 anos e foi moradora de rua antes de se juntar aos amigos. Sua mãe se suicidou e seu pai abandonou a família. Tem uma irmã gêmea a quem odeia. Ao conhecer seu meio irmão, aceita ser barriga de aluguel para ele. Na última temporada, casa-se com um personagem chamado Mike Hannigan (vivido pelo ator Paul Rudd).
Joey Tribbiani (LeBlanc) é um ator ítalo-americano que ficou famoso por conta de um personagem da telenovela "Days of our Lives". Companheiro de quarto de Chandler (Perry), nutriu por certo tempo um amor por Rachel (Jennifer).
Chandler (Perry) trabalhou com análise estatística até a temporada 9. Odiava tal serviço e a partir daí teve a coragem de se demitir para ir trabalhar com publicidade (algo de que realmente gostava). Sempre foi questionado sobre sua sexualidade pelo fato de ter um pai travesti. Sua mão é uma escritora de romance adultos. Antes de seu casamento com Monica (Courteney), teve - até a temporada 3 - um relacionamento longo com uma irritante personagem chamada Janice.
Ross Geller (Schwimmer) é o irmão mais velho de Monica (Courteney). Ama dinossauros e se divorciou três vezes durante a produção da série: da lésbica Carol (com quem teve Ben, seu primeiro filho), da britânica Emily (cujo nome ele trocou pelo de Rachel no dia do casamento) e de Rachel (casaram-se bêbados em Las Vegas).
Os episódios mostram as aventuras cômicas e romântica dos amigos em questões ligadas a carreira ou relacionamentos.
FRIENDS - VALOR DE CONTRATOS
Em seus contratos originais para a primeira temporada, cada membro do elenco recebia 22.500 dólares por episódio. Na segunda temporada os salários variavam até a casa de 40.000 dólares por episódio. Antes do início da terceira temporada, o elenco resolveu entrar com uma negociação coletiva, apesar da Warner preferir negociar individualmente. Com isso, Jennifer e Schwimmer tiveram seus ganhos reduzidos. A partir daí, o ganho passou a ser de 75.000 dólares por episódio na temporada 3, 85.000 dólares por episódio na temporada quatro, 100.000 dólares por episódio na temporada 5, 125.000 dólares por episódio na temporada 6, 750.000 dólares por episódio nas temporadas 7 e 8 e 1.000.000 de dólares por episódio nas temporadas 9 e 10. Isso fez de Jennifer, Courteney e Lisa as atrizes de TV mais bem pagas até então.
A partir do ano 2000, o elenco também passou a receber royalties através de sindicatos. Até então, só recebiam esse tipo de benefício astros ou atrizes que tinham direitos de propriedade em uma determinada série de TV (casos de Jerry Seinfeld e Bill Cosby).
O elenco de "Friends" fez um grande esforço para manter o formato de conjunto, não permitindo que um membro predominasse sobre os demais. Dessa forma, optaram por negociações coletivas e apareciam todos juntos em fotos de capa de revista na primeira temporada. Consta que todos terminaram o programa como grandes amigos fora do estúdio de gravação (principamente Jennifer e Courteney).
FRIENDS - CURIOSIDADES
Tendo trabalhado com David Schwimmer no passado, os criadores da série escreveram o personagem de Ross tendo o ator em mente. O papel não fora oferecido para mais ninguém;
Os produtores queriam que Courteney Cox interpretasse Rachel, porém ela recusou o papel e pediu para interpretar Monica;
Embora os produtores mostrassem histórias como se estivessem no local, "Friends" nunca fora filmada em Nova York. A maioria das gravações aconteceram em vários estúdios da Warner, daí o programa ter sido criticado por representar Nova York de uma forma incorreta;
O final da temporada 4 foi filmado em locações na cidade de Londres porque os produtores estavam mais do que cientes da popularidade da série no Reino Unido;
O final da temporada 5, que se passa em Las Vegas, também foi filmado num estúdio da Warner Bros;
Nos Estados Unidos, 52,5 milhões de telespectadores assistiram ao episódio final em 06 de Maio de 2004. Foi o episódio final de série mais visto desde o encerramento da série de TV "Seinfeld", em 1998. É o quarto final de série mais assistido da história da TV, atrás apenas dos finais de "Mash", "Cheers" e "Seinfeld", que foram assistidos por 105, 80,4 e 76,2 de milhões de telespectadores, respectivamente;
A reação da crítica foi mista quando do lançamento da série. Alguns chegaram a dizer que "Friends" tinha vagamente o mesmo estilo de "Seinfeld" com menos sucesso. Outros disseram que "Friends" era um novo "Seinfeld", mas nunca seria tão engraçado quanto. Outros disseram que os personagens de Joey e Rachel estavam subdesenvolvidos. Houve ainda quem dissesse que a série era composta por um "conjunto de jovens simpáticos". Na medida em que a série progredia, as opiniões foram se tornando positivas até transformarem a série numa das sitcoms mais populares de seu tempo;
Para preservar o formato de "grupo" o elenco preferiu decidiu se inscrever nas mesmas categorias de prêmios de atuação. "Friends" foi indicada a 63 prêmios Emmy, vencendo 6. Jennifer Aniston e Lisa Kudrow foram as únicas a ganharem um Emmy, enquanto Courteney Fox foi a única a não ser indicada. Em 2002, o programa ganhou o Emmy na categoria de "Melhor série de Comédia".

FRIENDS - TEMA DE ABERTURA
O tema de abertura da série é uma música do conjunto The Rembrandts, banda de Danny Wilde e Phil Solem. Eles estavam elaborando um novo álbum em 1994, mas antes tinham gravado anonimamente uma música tema para um programa de televisão. A música que gravaram, "I'll Be There for You" esteve entre as músicas mais pedidas em rádio, mesmo tendo apenas 32 segundos de duração. Em função disso, a banda foi obrigada pela gravadora a adicionar uma versão de corpo inteiro da música para seu terceiro disco, de 1995. O sucesso a elevou para a posição 17 dentre as 100 mais pedidas do período, chegando a ganhar um disco de platina.
FRIENDS - REPRISES
Em função da receita de distribuição, "Friends" continua a gerar aproximadamente 1 bilhão de dólares a cada ano para a Warner Bros. Isso significa cerca de 20 milhões de dólares em resíduos anuais para Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry e David Schwimmer.
FRIENDS - SÉRIE DERIVADA
Após o final de "Friends" em 2004, Matt LeBlanc assinou contrato para uma série derivada intitulada "Joey". Nela, o personagem se muda para Los Angeles para seguir a carreira de ator. Kauffman e Crane não se interessaram pelo projeto mas Bright concordou em produzir o programa junto com Scott Silveri e Shana Goldbert-Meehan. A NBC promoveu fortemente o programa e deu à ele o dia e horário antes ocupado por "Friends".O piloto foi assistido por mais de 18 milhões de americanos mas a audiência começou a cair durante as duas temporadas iniciais produzidas (10 milhões de telespectadores na primeira e 7 milhões na segunda). O episódio final foi exibido em 07 de Março de 2016.
FRIENDS - O FILME
Após o final da série, muito se especulou sobre a realização de um longa cinematográfico. Os boatos ficaram ainda mais acentuados depois do lançamento do filme "Sex and City" em 2008, que se tornou um sucesso de bilheteria. Em Julho desse mesmo ano, foi noticiado que os membros do elenco principal havia concordado em estrelar o projeto e que as filmagens iriam iniciar em 18 meses. Perguntada a respeito, Lisa Kudrow disse que não tinha conhecimento das negociações, mas se interessou pela idéia. Um diretor da Warner apareceu logo depois, alegando que havia "nenhuma verdade na história". O porta voz de Mattew Perry alegou ainda que nada estava acontecendo nesse sentido. Lisa Kudrow e Courteney Cox relataram para a Associated Press, em Janeiro de 2010, que nunca foram abordadas por Crane e Kauffman para estrelarem uma versão cinematográfica. No entanto, ambas e Jennifer Aniston se declararam abertas para estrelarem um episódio de reencontro.

FRIENDS - NO BRASIL
No Brasil, "Friends" estreou em 1996 no Canal Sony da TV a Cabo. Quando da exibição da oitava temporada, migrou para o Canal Warner Channel da TV a Cabo, onde ficou até o encerramento da série. Posteriormente, o Canal Warner voltou a exibir o programa, onde está em reprise até hoje.
Na TV aberta, estreou pela Rede TV! (ex-Manchete). O anúncio foi feito em Outubro de 1999. A comédia ia ao ar, já no ano 2000, aos sábados, as 21h45. O mais curioso na ocasião foi ouvir a versão dublada, já que até então o Canal Sony só exibia a série com legendas.
Em Março de 2004, "Friends" passou a fazer parte da grade de programação do SBT. entrava as quartas-feiras, as 23h30, logo após o "Show do Milhão". As exibições na emissora terminaram em 2005. Algum tempo depois, o SBT exibiu a série derivada chamada "Joey" (que na emissora ganhou o título de "Vida de Artista").
Consta que entre Rede TV! e SBT apenas as 3 primeiras temporadas da série foram exibidas em nossa TV aberta. Tais temporadas foram dubladas pela Herbert Richers. As temporadas 4 a 9 foram dubladas pelo Grupo Macias. Coube a Herbert Richers dublar a 10ª e última temporada do programa.
