Pouca gente sabe, mas antes de se tornar um consagrado ator de cinema, Clint Eastwood estrelou uma série de TV do gênero western levada ao ar por quase oito anos nos Estados Unidos.

Estamos falando de "Rawhide", exibida entre os americanos de 09 de Janeiro de 1959 a 07 de Dezembro de 1965. A série foi produzida e por vezes dirigida por Charles Marquis Warren, que também produziu episódios iniciais de outra série de sucesso: "Gunsmoke". Por seus sete anos e meio de produção, "Rawhide" é a quinta série western mais longa já produzida. Perde para os oito anos de "Caravana" (Wagon Train), nove anos de "O Homem de Virgínia" (The Virginian), quatorze anos de "Bonanza" e vinte anos de "Gunsmoke".

No Brasil, foi lançada pela TV Record Canal 7 de São Paulo, no dia 11 de Outubro de 1967, uma quarta-feira, as 22h30, após a telessérie "A Caldeira do Diabo". Não fez aqui nem sombra do sucesso que fez lá fora. Entre os brasileiros, era anunciada na grade programação como "Rawhide (Couro Crú)". Em alguns jornais, o anúncio dado na grade de programação era incorreto; ou seja, dividiam a palavra título em duas (Raw Hide).

Com letra escrita por Ned Washington em 1958 e melodia a cargo de Dimitri Tiomkin, o tema musical se tornou um sucesso imediato na voz de Frankie Laine. Poucos sabem, mas é esse tema que vimos nos filmes "The Blues Brothers" e "Shrek".

Os episódios da série basicamente narravam as aventuras de um grupo de homens encarregados de levar gado de uma cidade para outra, liderados Gil Favor (Eric Fleming), sempre auxiliado por Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood). Os cenários eram imensas pradarias e as várias cidades por onde os personagens passavam, enfrentando toda uma sorte de bandidos, lobos, criminosos, estouro de gado, etc. Vários atores em início de carreira atuaram como convidados (dentre eles, Charles Bronson, James Drury, Robert Culp, Frankie Avalon, Burgess Meredith, Lee Van Cleef e Eddie Albert).

O título de cada episódio era  precedido do termo "Incident at" ou "Incident of". Tal prática fora abolida a partir da sétima temporada do programa.

Entre os brasileiros é quase certo que apenas a primeira temporada tenha sido exibida. Por muitos anos ausente, só retornaria por volta de 2005, via extinto Retro Channel (canal argentino que na ocasião fazia parte da grade oferecida pela DirecTV). Na ocasião, os episódios mostrados apresentavam som original com legendas em português.

Eric Fleming nasceu Edward Heddy Jr no dia 04 de Julho de 1925 na Califórnia. Teve uma infância infeliz, era espancado pelo pai e por conta disso optou por sair de casa. Durante a Segunda Grande Guerra Mundial entrou para a marinha americana onde, a serviço numa construção naval, recebeu várias lesões na face. Recuperou-se após várias cirurgias plásticas, saiu da marinha e iniciou estudos para ser ator. Após estrelar filmes de baixo orçamento no cinema, aceitou interpretar Gil Favor na série "Rawhide". Após o cancelamento do programa, resolveu voltar para o cinema. Numa sequência de filmagem no Perú, Fleming e o ator Nico Minardos estavam numa canoa quando a mesma virou. Minardos conseguiu chegar a margem mas Fleming foi arrastado pela correnteza vindo a morrer afogado, aos 41 anos de idade, no dia 28 de Setembro de 1966. De casamento marcado com Lynn Garber, deixou em testamento todo o dinheiro que tinha para a mãe, um primo e um amigo. Seu pai fora totalmente excluído da herança.

Clint Eastwood nasceu Clinton Eastwood Jr. no dia 31 de Maio de 1930 na Califórnia. Depois do encerramento de "Rawhide" partiu para uma série de faroestes filmados na Itália. De volta para os Estados Unidos, construiu uma sólida carreira. Estrelou vários filmes que se tornaram famosos. Atuou também como produtor, diretor e compositor. Já fora premiado com o Golden Globe, Oscar, People's Choice Award e Screen Actor Guid Award.
