A série de TV "Cidade Nua" foi criada a partir de um filme de 1948 que, com o mesmo título, tinha o formato de semi-documentário em tom dramático. Sua abordagem era inédita para a época: locação na cidade de New York, focando o 65o Distrito da Policia - NYPD (distrito este que na verdade era o Midtown North Precinct, na 306 West 54th Street). Os enredos mostravam criminosos e vítimas, sempre protagonizados por artistas pouco conhecidos, que depois se tornariam famosos.

Algumas cenas de "Cidade Nua" foram filmadas também em Grenwich Village e bairros de Manhattan. O roteirista Stirling Silliphant (que atuou em "Rota 66") foi o primeiro a dar um foco dramático inteligente, misturando até elementos de comédia.

A série iniciou com James Franciscus e John McIntire a frente do elenco. Horace McMahon passou a integra-lo ainda na primeira fase do programa e Paul Burke só assumiu o papel do detetive Adam Flint a partir do início da segunda temporada.

Hoje "Cidade Nua" atrai mais por ter colocado jovens atores em papéis de destaque, jovens estes que mais tarde se tornaram celebridades, como é o caso de Peter Falk, Robert Duvall, Carrol O´Connor, Jean Stapleton, George Segal, Robert Redford, Jon Voight, William Shatner, Roddy McDowall e até Dustin Hoffman.

A série foi exibida originalmente nos Estados Unidos, pela rede ABC, entre 30 de setembro de 1958 e 29 de maio de 1963, totalizando 138 episódios em preto e branco. No Brasil:

• Lançada pela TV Record, Canal 7 de SP, em 04 de Março de 1963, uma segunda-feira, as 21h30, já mostrando os episódios estrelados por Paul Burke;
• Em 1965 migrou para a TV Excelsior Canal 9 de SP;
• Em 1971 foi reapresentada pela TV Bandeirantes Canal 13 de SP;
• Foi relançada depois, em 1989, pela TV Gazeta Canal 11 de São Paulo, numa faixa retrô que também apresentava "Perdidos no Espaço", "Judd", "Rota 66" e "Além da Imaginação".

Consta que a última exibição da série entre nós ocorreu em 1996, através do Canal Sony da TV a Cabo, quando muitos episódios foram exibidos com som original e sem nenhuma legenda.
